We were thrilled to be selected to participate in the Showcase program of the MovieLabs 2030 Vision — a bold 10-year roadmap aimed at transforming content production, post-production, and visual effects (VFX) through the adoption of best practice processes and cutting-edge technologies.
The initiative closely aligns with Sohonet's own vision to revolutionise how Storytellers create content by making collaboration seamless and more secure.
In the following case study, we highlight our partnership with Riot Games, who leveraged our production asset management platform, Core, to deliver a cloud-based, secure workflow. Below is a brief summary, but be sure to check out the full story.
Sohonet and Riot Games Case Study
Riot Games was looking for an asset management system that could centralise their media assets while providing security beyond traditional single sign-on (SSO). They required a solution that offered detailed control over user roles and permissions across multiple teams.
Sohonet’s production asset management platform Core was the ideal fit, integrating with Riot Games' identity management systems, including Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) and System for Cross-domain Identity Management (SCIM). SCIM enabled automated provisioning and de-provisioning of user access, significantly reducing manual work and the risk of human error.
By using Core, Riot Games achieved a secure, scalable, cloud-based asset management system that allowed their IT teams to manage permissions efficiently. This implementation reflects the principles of the MovieLabs 2030 Vision for future-proof, cloud-based production workflows.
Brief summary of the MovieLabs Sohonet Case Study:
Riot Games Requirement: Riot Games needed an advanced asset management system that offered more than just standard perimeter security and Single Sign-On (SSO). They required a system that provided granular permissions and centralised control for managing media assets across multiple internal teams.
Sohonet Core Solution: Sohonet deployed its “Core” asset management solution, integrating Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) and System for Cross-domain Identity Management (SCIM) protocols to manage user accounts and enforce advanced identity and access management.
Centralised User Management: The Core solution enabled Riot Games' IT teams to manage users through centralised provisioning, leveraging their existing IDP system (e.g., Microsoft Active Directory) with Okta for role-based access control (RBAC).
Granular Permissions: Riot Games could assign granular, role-based access to users, allowing for varying levels of access across different applications, streamlining workflows, and improving security management.
SCIM Integration: SCIM simplified the bulk provisioning and decommissioning of users, making it easier for Riot Games to scale user onboarding and offboarding during large-scale productions.
Role-Based Access Control (RBAC): SCIM and SAML integration allowed Riot Games to automate the assignment of user roles and permissions, enhancing security by reducing the need for manual role adjustments within the application.
Zero Trust Framework: The Core system was built around a zero trust security model, ensuring strict control over access permissions and allowing Riot Games to manage their security needs with high granularity.
Cloud-Based Asset Management: The Core solution provided Riot Games with a centralised, cloud-based library for managing, storing, and sharing production assets, including video, audio, and metadata, hosted on AWS.
Benefits of SCIM and SAML: The integration of SCIM and SAML in the Core system provided Riot Games with the ability to centralise identity and access management across all their cloud-based workflows, reducing complexity and enhancing security.
Future Steps for Sohonet: Sohonet plans to integrate IDAM capabilities into other products in its portfolio, such as ClearView and FileRunner, to create a unified identity management solution across multiple applications.
This case study highlights the power of integrating advanced identity management solutions into media production environments to enhance security and streamline workflows.
MovieLabs’ 2030 Vision outlines a future where content production is fully cloud-based, secure, and flexible. It emphasises zero trust security, automation, and efficient user management to ensure media creation and collaboration happen in a highly secure environment.
